Azam Shah made his bid for the Mughal throne against his elder brother Mu’azzam, or Shah Alam Bahadur, soon after the death of their father Aurangzeb in March 1707. Azam’s short-lived authority was accepted in Western India, Malwa and parts of the Deccan.
