Punch Marked Coins, Kalinga Janapada, Silver Karshapana, 3.39g, Obv: four Symbol Coin, ABCC pattern. Elephant to L. with some object over it, Candelabrum or two bulls yoked to a plough and turtle (x 2). (Rjgr S# 48). Extremely fine, extremely rare. Kalinga was in modern day Orissa and as a janapada finds mention in Mahabharata and Kumbhakara Jataka. Also referred to by Panini and Baudhayana. This was among the last of janapadas to have lost its independence (at the hands of Ashoka the great) in famous Kalinga war.
