Kuras of Kolhapur, Maharathi Kura, Lead, 1.57g, “Feudatory issue”, Obv: Strung bow and arrow in the centre, Brahmi legend “Maha[rathisa Ku]rasa” around, Rev: Tree in railing with triangle-headed standard as a post-head of railing; wavy line below. Extremely fine, extremely rare.The Kuras assumed coining authority first as feudatories of the Satavahanas during the mid-1st century AD, when the imperial power was weakened. The earliest Kura issues have the legend ‘Maharathisa Kurasa’. Generally, they are known as larger denominations. As a fractional issue, this coin is of a high rarity.
