D. Sebastiao, Tin/Lead Bazarucco, 1.86g, Chaul and Damao Mints, Obv: Crowned arms of Portuguese India, Rev: Small cross in centre superimposed on a bunch of arrows, topped with the letter ‘S’. Letters ‘C’ (for Chaul) and letter ‘D’ (for Damao) on either side (Not listed in KM). Unpublished, extremely fine, extremely rare. This is perhaps the earliest Bazarucco (coming from ‘Bazar’ + ‘Rook’ meaning ‘small market change’) struck in tin or lead by the Portuguese on the Western coast of India soon after they managed to establish their power in North Konkan, after defeating Bahadur Shah, the Sultan
