Burhanpur, Silver 1/4 Rupee, 2.64g, in the name of Shah Alam II, AH 1184 (Not listed in M&W). Very fine, extremely rare. The Peshwas gained the fort and town of Burhanpur from the Nizam of Haidarabad after Sadashiv Rao Bhau inflicted a defeat on him at the battle of Udgir. They held it till 1778 when the provinces of Nemar and Khandesh were assigned to the Sindhias. Burhanpur remained under Gwalior control till 1860. This coin, dated AH1184 falls right in the middle of Maratha rule. All fractional issues of this period are extremely rare.
