The town of Indore was given the name ‘Malharnagar’ by Malhar Rao Holkar, the progenitor of the Holkar house which ruled till the merger of the princely state of Indore in India in 1948. Although the exact date of this conspicuous name change is not known, coins dating from RY Ahd of Alamgir II (1754-55) bearing the mint name ‘Malharnagar’ are known so it must have happened at a date earlier than this year.
