South India, Coimbatore region, Copper 2 Cash, 3.21g, Obv: “Veera” Hanuman, Rev: Crudely engraved legend “Shri Venkata Rao” arranged in a typical “grid” pattern of 17th century AD. Extremely fine, rare. Mitchiner attributes these coins to local rulers in the Kongu region, probably acknowledging Venkata Pati Raya III, one of the Vijayanagara rulers. Similar coins were struck during 18th century by the Nawabs of Arcot.
