Rama Varma V, Gold 1/2 Sovereign, 4.05g, 1881, Obv: Bust of Maharaja Rama Varma with legend “Rama Varma Maharaja of Travancore 1881” around, Rev: Conch flanked by Elephants above the crown, crossed sceptres, Malayalam numerals 1057 below (B. Sarasan# 216). Extremely fine+, extremely rare. These Gold Sovereigns are not part of the State currency but struck on special occasion. The dies were made in Birmingham Mint and struck at Bombay Mint in 1882 AD. Half Sovereign are rarer than Sovereign.
