Punjab, Rajanya Janapada, Copper, 1.18g, “Tribal” series, Obv: Goddess standing facing left, Brahmi legend “Rajaña Ja(na)….” Above, Rev: Bull standing with a rayed circle, partly visible. Very fine, extremely rare. The coinage of the Rajanya Janapada (county) is one of the rare categories of the so-called ‘tribal’ coins of North India. The Rajanyas were a Kshatriya tribe and find mention in many ancient sources like the Mahabharata and the treatises of Patanjali and Katyayana.
